FIRST division side Sinnington had to dig deep to progress into the quarter-finals of the Gordon Harrison Memorial Trophy when they hosted second division outfit Heslerton reserves.

They were behind at half-time of the newitts.com Beckett League knockout competition tie until a two-goal salvo in 10 minutes turned the match around, though the Sinners still had to hold on at the end.

Heslerton started well and took a deserved lead after a fine counter attack. Goalkeeper Mick Norman, Hessy's player-manager, gathered a cross and rolled the ball out to Steve Walker, who sent a long pass forward for Dan Blanchard to take in his stride, beat the last man and deliver an angled drive into the bottom corner of the net.

The second half saw the Sinners up their game and their equaliser followed some tenacious battling on the edge of the Hessy penalty area - Graham Bateman scoring with a precise shot into the bottom corner.

Minutes later, a Bateman free-kick was headed into his own goal by the unlucky Jermaine Timms.

Hessy kept on battling away and saw a shot graze the outside of a post but, despite pegging the Sinners back during the closing stages, they could not find an equaliser.

Rob Atkinson and Graham Bateman impressed for the Sinners, while Norman was Heslerton's man of the match for his expert handling throughout.

There was a major surprise in the Ryedale Hospital Cup, though, as second division side Gillamoor upset current first division leaders Bagby & Balk with a 2-1 win.

Bagby & Balk took the lead but Ryan Mintoft equalised 10 minutes before half-time.

Jack Dowson went close for the Moorsiders after five minutes, while Lee Nesfield was denied by goalkeeper Jake Wilson after 14, but Wombleton saw several chances go begging at the other end - Connor Campbell, Luke McLaren, Sean Walker, Tom Ellis, Josh Tateson and Luke Tateson all missing out, with man-of-the-match Dave Gardner and Andrew Ferguson were outstanding at the heart of the Moorsiders defence.

The second half saw the Moorsiders shock their hosts and take a two-goal lead, Dowson scoring both.

But Wombleton stormed back with Connor Campbell and Luke Tateson scoring in quick succession, the latter from the spot after Jake Dennison was brought down.

Wombleton’s pace up front was a constant problem for the Kirkby defence, and it showed again as Dennison sprinted down the wing and crossed for Josh Tateson to put his side ahead for the first time.

Luke Tateson then chipped the ball over the defence for man-of-the-match Tom Ellis - a former Moorsiders player - to run through and make it four.
