MALTON lost a hard-fought match 3-2 to Wigginton 1 in the Yorkshire League first division.

Malt’s wins came from Jamie Hopwood and Terry Wilson. The team still picked up nine valuable points and are in seventh place in the table.

In York & District League division three, Malton 2 had wins from Joel Preston and Steve Everitt but they went down 3-2 at home to Wigginton 4, and dropped back a place to third.

Malton 4 have enjoyed two wins in a week in division five to go second.

The first was 4-1 at Pocklington 3, with victories coming from Steve King, Kevin Goddard, James Criddle and Mike Hammond. Then came a 3-2 home win over Selby 6, with Adam Duffill, Hammond and Andy Criddle victorious.

In the York & District Ladies’ League, Malton 1 lost 4-1 in their division one opener to David Lloyd 1. Fiona Brown got their sole win.

Meanwhile, Bradford recently hosted the Yorkshire U3A Racketball Championships at the Heaton Tennis and Squash Club - with Ryedale U3A’s team enjoying success.

Players came from across Yorkshire, and Ryedale were represented by Gordon Malan, Bob Coursey, Barrie Elener and Raymond Harben.

The action took place on a glass back court, with the two groups for experienced players won by Terry Wassall, of Bradford, and Stephen Widdison, of Wetherby, with the latter winning their final.

The two improvers’ groups were won by Malan and Elener, both from Ryedale, with the former overcoming the latter in the final.

Fiona Crompton, of Haxby, won the women’s experienced competition and Mary Bean, of Bradford, the intermediate section.

Ryedale U3A play racketball each week at Malton Squash and Racketball Club, and the group have also entered two mixed teams for an U3A competition in Chapel Allerton, Leeds.

Malton’s own recent racketball handicap competition was won by Ian Hoggart, who overcame Ian Strangeway in the final.

Bob Coursey won the plate final with victory over Andy Newsome.
