MALTON rider Ian Austermuhle held off a strong challenges to take the expert class at Eboracum Motor Club’s prestigious Colonial Trial.

The event may not now have national status, but the name alone assures a first-class entry.

The three-lap moorland course at Hill House, Farndale, also brings the best out of riders and Beta uk ace Austermuhle had to be on form to pip Faceby-based British expert champion Guy Kendrew and Kirkbymoorside’s rising young star, Dan Peace, the British youth ‘A’ class champion.

A cold wind kept the rain at bay and Austermuhle lost his only two marks on the first lap on sections three and four. After that he remained feet up.

Kendrew and Peace lost ground on the fifth and ninth sections where Peace, unluckily, dislodged a flag first lap.

Kirkbymoorside’s Mark Harrison topped the ever-growing intermediate class entry ahead of York’s Pete Sharp, with the latter hitting trouble on the eighth where he lost a vital six marks.

The best turnout for some time in the youth entry saw Jack Peace, the younger brother of Dan, take the class wins in youth ‘A’.

Meanwhile, Acklam’s Beta-sponsored rider, Adam Milner, from Leavening, is currently on the injured list.

Luckless Milner tore a cruciate ligament in a crash during the second round of the British Championship in Devon. The talented youngster requires surgery and he could be out of action for six months.

Milner is still doing his bit for trials as an observer, including at the Colonial Trial on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Pickering Moto Cross Club held a successful race meeting at Haygate Lane, Pickering, on Sunday, with good weather resulting in a bumper entry.

Club members did a fine job in running the meeting in the absence due to illness of long-standing organiser and club stalwart David Brown, who was much missed.

The experts class was won by Ryan Voase, from Hornsea.

Pickering MX Club’s next meeting will be at the same venue on November 16.

Their annual dinner and presentation evening, meanwhile, will be held at the Feathers Hotel, Helmsley, on November 29.
