HOST runners starred at Pickering Running Club’s popular Saltergate Gallows fell race comprising 11 miles of varied terrain and climbing almost 1,700 feet.

Simon Jones’ flat speed gave him the edge over his closest rival, and he put the hammer down on the fast two-mile stretch around the Hole of Horcum to win the race outright in a time of 78 minutes 40 seconds.

Mike Todd was next PRC man, finishing strongly for ninth overall and third in category in 87-30, almost six minutes faster than last year.

Completing the PRC men’s ‘A’ team was Russ Grayson, getting back into the fell racing zone and galloping home in 95-13.

Not far behind was the tenacious Paul Smith, who charged in in 97-13 for fourth in category, beating his time last year by over 10 minutes.

Experienced fell runner Mike Wilson was next in 100-29 achieving fifth in his category, which was also where Russ Charlton finished - fifth in his category in 102-15.

Ever improving, Simon Tyrell completed the men’s second team, finishing in 106-31, also taking 10 minutes off his previous time.

The ladies team stormed to victory and their secret weapon was new member Chris Raw, who, after some time away from running, put in a gutsy performance to finish first in category in 104-28.

Lynn Humpleby was fourth in category in 116-35. Sue Slack also had a good run to finish fourth in category in 124-30.

Serena Partridge took second in category, gliding round in 127-25, with Shirley Tyrell completing the outstanding team results to finish in 132-53, taking first in category.

Only a week later, Simon Jones led the team to glory again in the Yorkshire Marathon. Jones knocked around 10 minutes from his PB. He completed in two hours 54-59 for 53rd place, and fifth in category.

Chris Raw also followed up her fell race success with her first marathon in almost two years with a fabulous time of 3:54-29.
