WHITBY TOWN came back from a goal down to earn a deserved Turnbull Ground draw with Trafford in the Evo-Stik League premier division - with the offside flag and a flying stoppage-time save denying them all the spoils.
The visitors went in front with a Shelton Payne goal in the 21st minute and, although the Blues made a great start to the second half, they didn’t fashion an equaliser until the 68th minute.
It was former Spennymoor midfielder Ross Gardner who made the breakthrough - scoring with a tremendous shot from 25 yards which flew in off the crossbar.
Whitby were well on top, but had two goals disallowed - the unlucky Steven Snaith being denied by the offside flag either side of Gardner’s goal - and, in injury time, Craig Farrell saw a goal-bound free-kick superbly tipped over the crossbar.
That result followed a goalless draw at home to miserly Workington the previous Wednesday.
Saturday sees 10th-placed Whitby take to the road as they negotiate the long journey to the West Midlands to face fourth-placed Rushall Olympic (3pm).
The Blues then go over the Pennines to Ramsbottom United next Tuesday night (7.45pm).
