YORK RUFC produced an error-hit display in losing 28-12 at Wath-on-Dearne to undermine their recent progress in Yorkshire One.

A Josh Britland kick to the corner earned York a scrum on the five-metre from which Alex Nixon dived in on the blind side to open the scoring.

A penalty enabled Wath to cut the lead, the hosts then carving out a fluent move for number ten Barrett to go over between the posts. He tagged on the conversion.

Another handling error then let in home loose head McCarthty to cross for a 17-5 half0-time advantage.

Soon after the re-start Barrett kicked another penalty, followed by another in quick succession.

York finally responded through John Dawes fielding and fending off tacklers to score and convert after a 40-metre surge.

Another York penalty led to a Wath kick and a good driving maul producing the final try.

Elsewhere in the division, Hipperholme has traditionally never been a favourite hunting ground for Malton & Norton.

But they snatched a 20-18 victory from the jaws of defeat in a battling performance against a committed Old Brodleians side.

Playing against the slope, Malt went behind to a penalty.

The visitors then sprang back but flanker Ali Coe was deemed to have been held up as he crossed.

A trip by Mark Bradshaw led to another penalty successfully converted by Old Brods.

Old Brods were showing some strong running but the Malton defence was solid with fly-half Nick Daley putting in some big tackles to drive them back.

A good break from skipper Sam Triffitt took Malton deep into the home 22 metre area and when the tackler failed to release his man Zwelakhe Sodladla had no trouble in converting the penalty.

From the restart Brods were again given a penalty when the Malton backs were again caught offside for Malton to trail 9-3 at half-time.

Playing down the slope Malton’s pack dominated the scrum.

Only good handling at the base by the home number eight saved his side as Malton swarmed forward.

Sodladla reduced the deficit when Brods strayed offside and then solid ball retention gave hooker Nick Salisbury the touchdown in the corner for the game’s first try.

A fine kick by Sodladla put Malton 13-9 up.

Brods still posed problems when in possession, though the Malton defence held firm.

A long kick downfield by Sodladla bounced over the head of the home fullback and Sodladla, following up at speed, managed to toe to ball and race clear only to see the ball run dead before he could get a touch.

With the game drawing to a close another piece of indiscipline from Bradshaw saw him consigned to the sin bin for a high tackle.

Brods kicked to the corner where a short pass led to the winger crossing. The conversion put the hosts 16-13 ahead with just five minutes to go.

Back came Malton. Winger Sizwe Zondo somehow emerged with the ball and strolled over untouched beneath the posts to score. Sodladla added the extras to reward a battling performance.
