THE new Brooklyn Ladies football team enjoyed a great competitive debut - captain Anna Spragg hitting four goals in a 5-1 win over Brompton Ladies.

The team are the first open-age women’s outfit in the Malton area and have joined the North Riding FA Women’s League, competing against the likes of York City women’s reserves.

Their first-ever league match ended in a notable maiden victory, based on a superb first-half display which brought all six of the game’s goals.

Brooklyn club spokesman Matty Hood said: “They put in an incredible first-half performance which saw them race to a 5-1 half-time lead.

“Despite Brooklyn not adding to their tally in the second half, the tempo and attitude to attack was first class. All 15 players put in excellent displays.”

Despite starting the game slowly, Brooklyn took the lead on 15 minutes with Chantelle Burdett scoring from outside the area to settle any early nerves.

Skipper Spragg then took over, hitting the next four goals, including finishing a great move which involved Chloe Shipley breaking up play in defence, surging past three players and laying the ball off to Sarah Jaques whose wonderful pass split the Brompton defence open for Spragg to run onto and score.

Apart from Brompton’s goal, stand-in goalkeeper Sam Buckley was a virtual spectator as Brooklyn dominated throughout.

Hanna Green was a constant threat down the right and sub Nicky Fox came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. The player of the match was Sally Ellis, on her first start, being outstanding alongside Shipley in central defence.

Brooklyn have no game this weekend ahead of a trip to Catterick Garrison on September 21.
