SHOW some pride. That's what Pickering Town boss Mitch Cook is hoping his players will do at Bridlington Town tonight as they bid to recover from their second six goal thrashing of the new campaign.

The Pikes go to Cook's former stamping ground having been humiliated as Shaw Lane Aquaforce fired in six of the best against his sorry side in the Northern Counties East League premier division last Saturday.

Following the humbling by Washington in the FA Cup, the result washed away the optimism earned by a 1-0 win over Glasshoughton Welfare in midweek and left Cook determined his side must right those wrongs this evening (Wednesday, kick off 7.45pm).

He faces a tough task - without forward trio Tony Hackworth, who is suspended, Liam Salt, suffering with a knee injury, and Joe Danby - but is determined there must be a better showing.

"We picked up injuries against Washington but, as is the case, every mistake we made was punished," he said of the Shaw Lane loss. "I am gutted and the players are bitterly disappointed with how they have reacted.

"Tom Woodhead dislocated his elbow and everything that could go wrong did. We have got to knuckle down (in those situations) and make sure we lose 2-0, not 6-0. The players have got that to live with and do something about it. If they don't I will have to."

Barnsley-based Shaw Lane took a three goal first half lead with goals fromShane Kelsey on 15 and 33 minutes and Matt Thornhill adding a third three minutes before half-time.

Goalkeeper Woodhead was carried off following the second strike and Callum Myers took over in the Pickering net.

Shaw Lane's dominance continued after the break with a brace from Joe Thornton on 51 and 57 minutes and the sixth arriving three minutes from the end through Alex Callery.

Cook added: "I am expecting a response against Bridlington and I am sure the players hope to give it from the reaction I have had from them. The club expects it - for our own personal pride if nothing else.

"Bridlington have had a great start. I watched them against Whitley Bay at home in the FA Cup and they did ever so well. Then they went there and won and have followed that up with two wins in the league.

"I managed them for two years and it is a difficult place to go."

Pickering did, at least, get their first three point haul of the campaign at home against Glasshoughton. They took the lead in the third minute thanks to a fine move involving Lewis Taylor and Liam Salt.

The latter's shot hit the post but Joel Ramm was on hand to force the ball into the goal from close range.

Welfare, who looked more likely to score the longer the game went on, had the ball in the net with seven minutes left on the clock but the effort was disallowed for offside.

Pickering have a re-arranged league game at Worksop Town to negotiate on Saturday.
