STAXTON completed a league and cup double at the weekend in the Scarborough Beckett League premier division.

Staxton lifted the top tier’s Cayley Cup on Sunday by beating Heslerton, 24 hours after beating Filey by 94 runs to lift the championship crown for a ninth time.

They had needed just six points against lowly Filey to secure the title with one game to go – and they bagged the full 20 after racing to a formidable 257-3 in their allotted 45 overs.

Skipper Nick Gibson led the way, hitting an excellent 120, with Chris Dove remaining 65 not out.

Filey in reply were bowled out for 163, with Paul Bowes (51) and Phil Dickens (48) making decent contributions.

On Sunday, Staxton came up against second-placed Heslerton in the final of the 20-overs competition at Flixton.

They totalled 159-5 when taking first knock, with in-form Dove (39), Paul Witty (39) and James Armstrong (25 not out) doing well, before bowling Heslerton out for 123 all out, of which Tom Benthall made 33 and Jake Keyworth 21. Elliott Cooper took 3-15 and Adrian Long 3-30.

On Saturday, last year’s champions, Heslerton, seemed on course for victory after three straight losses and a rained-off match, but they were again thwarted by the weather as they entertained Cayton.

Alex Carrie and Michael Dawson featured in an opening partnership of 51 before the latter was brilliantly caught behind by Darren Foreman for 29. This heralded a mini collapse as slow bowlers Colin Denton (3-75) and Paul Woodhead (3-34) entered the attack, Alex Carrie being caught at point for 40, and it needed a defiant first league half-century by Tom Benthall (54) to boost the final total to 197-7 at tea.

After the break, Woodhead made 31 and John Crowe 30 for Cayton but heavy rain ended play with the visitors on 104-5 after 33 overs.

At the bottom, the relegation scrap will go down to the upcoming final weekend of fixtures after the bottom three – Filey, Flixton II and Seamer – all lost.

Flixton II are level on points with Filey after a heavy defeat to Staithes in which the visitors racked up 280-7, with Richard Hegarty cracking 111, before bowling out the hosts for just 78, of which Mick Walmsley made 35. Simon Bowes starred, following his knock of 57 by claiming 7-28.

Seamer are 10 points below them after a seven-wicker defeat to Ebberston, having been bowled out for 105 - Eddie Craggs the chief destroyer with 6-28 to counter a fine 57 by Brendon Tyzzer.

An unbroken stand between Neil Eddon (28no) and Craggs (34no) took Ebberston home.

Elsewhere, Kirkbymoorside suffered a nine-wicket hammering at home by Forge Valley.

Jimmy Harper made 35 but the Moorsiders were all out for 98 and Sam Woodhead (49no) and Tom Brough (35no) saw Valley to victory.

On Saturday, Filey go to third-placed Forge Valley, Flixton II visit fourth-placed Ebberston and Seamer go to Heslerton.
