MORE of the same is the target for Pickering potter Paul Davison as he steps up his bid to return to the professional main tour.

The 42-year-old cue ace is in action this week at the Paul Hunter Classic - the second of six events that form this season’s European Tour.

Davison must come through three amateur rounds, beginning with a best-of-seven frames clash against Sydney Wilson in Furth, Germany, tomorrow (Thursday).

Should he do so, he is set to meet up-and-coming talent Kyren Wilson in the first round proper.

Davison enters the event, which is held to remember the Leeds-based three times Masters champion who died of cancer aged just 27, in the highest of spirits having put together a useful run at the Riga Open, in Latvia, earlier in the month.

After coming through the amateur rounds with 4-2 and 4-1 victories over Michael Collumb and Roman Dietzel respectively, Davison then sprang a shock by beating world number 39 Jack Lisowski 4-3.

Davison trailed 2-0 and 3-1 in that match but fought back superbly - with efforts of 48, 34 and 44 - before edging a tense final frame in the colours.

Buoyed by that performance, he then put Gerard Greene to the sword 4-1 before eventually falling to Matthew Selt 4-2 in the last 32.

That set of results immediately put Davison in the box seat for one of eight qualifying positions back on to the main tour.

Should the two-decade veteran maintain his performances throughout the rest of the events, he will re-establish his professional credentials if he finishes as one of the top eight players in the rankings who do not already have a tour card.
