School sport: Unlucky Ryedale edged out

Ryedale School’s Year 9 team just missed out on progression through the Scarborough & District stages to a regional hockey tournament.

A lucky late goal gave hosts Scarborough College a 1-0 win over Ryedale in the opening match played in terrible rain, and they also beat Fyling Hall, meaning a 2-0 win over the latter was not enough to send Ryedale through. Ryedale’s Alice Hall stood out.

Ryedale were also unlucky against Norton College in a mixed sex Year 11 fixture in which many of the boys played hockey competitively for the first time. Jeremy Underwood in defence, Charlotte Woodfine in midfield and Peter Pittaway in attack stood out but Ryedale lost 1-0, having missed chances.

Ryedale School’s Year 9 and 10 netball teams thrashed their Norton College counterparts 32-2 and 31-0 respectively.

Laura Laycock and Hannah Woodward stood out for the Year 9s, and Megan Bell, Rosie Collier and Eliza Dwyer for the Year 10s.

Two Year 10 students from Malton School were selected to be ball girls at the netball international between England and Jamaica, the third in a series of test matches, which was held in Sheffield.

Annabelle Francis and Maddie Dean were selected to be volunteers after applying through Yorkshire Netball, and met the England players following their decisive 62-58 win.
