Fine end to term for Old Malton St Mary’s youngsters
2:55pm Wednesday 23rd May 2012 in Junior Sport
OLD Malton St Mary’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams ended their season in style as they met in the final of the annual Poppleton Plate.
Both teams progressed through their respective groups to reach the semi-final stages where the ‘A’ team beat Wigginton Grasshoppers 1-0 thanks to a fine strike from Josh Lee. The ‘B’ team beat Hamilton Panthers in a penalty shoot-out.
The final was played in great spirit as each team looked to create goal scoring opportunities. The deadlock was eventually broken when Von Sumsard scored after good work from Lysander Jones and Lewis Pople. With a couple of minutes remaining, Sumsard scored his and the ‘A’ team’s second from close range.
Scarborough Athletic Under-16s beat Seamer 3-1 to win the Scarborough & District FA Senior Minor Cup final at Thornton-le-Dale last week.
Club chairman Dave Holland said it was the club’s first-ever piece of silverware.
Athletic took the lead with a stunning 25-yard free-kick into the top corner by Tommy Wilson.
Seamer should have immediately equalised when Matty Morris set up Josh Venner but he shot wide, and they were unlucky on half-time when Venner’s effort again went wide after a remarkable run.
They did level 15 seconds into the second half when Morris flicked the ball on, Venner crossed from the right and Chris Mattinson nipped in at the far post to slot the ball home.
However, within a minute, Athletic regained the lead when Tyler Richardson’s superb through ball allowed Harry Pollard to run on and score, and four minutes later Pollard scored his second with an excellent volley to clinch the game.
