Junior football round-up
1:17pm Wednesday 2nd May 2012 in Junior Sport
Pickering Town Under-14s won the Scarborough & District FA Junior Minor Cup for under-14s in incredible fashion.
They trailed 4-1 to Seamer Sports at half-time, but equalised in the 89th minute, went ahead in the last minute and scored twice in injury time to win 7-4.
Kirkbymoorside U14s, though, had the pain of penalty shoot-out defeat to Fishburn Park ‘A’ in the Minor Cup final.
Pickering Town took the lead in their final after 30 seconds thanks to a Luke Balderson goal, but Seamer came back with an excellent first-half performance to lead 4-1 at the interval with braces from both Tom Fletcher-Varey and Alfie Cotterill.
In the second half, the young Pikes improved – and stunned everyone in the finale. Balderson was the main goal hero with five strikes in all, with Tom Richardson scoring the other two.
The Minor Cup final was played on Whitby Town’s ground last week with Fishburn Park winning 6-5 on penalties after the game had ended 2-2 against Kirkbymoorside U14s.
Sam Pike put Park ahead after 24 minutes with a fine solo goal and added a second goal after 31 minutes. Jordan Thackray pulled one back for the young Moorsiders after 34 minutes, and they equalised 15 minutes into the second half with an excellent goal by Matthew Butler.
Extra time brought no more goals, and the shoot-out saw Harry Purves, Pike, Jay Stonehouse, Harry Lightening and Spencer Hewison all score for Park, with Jack Simpson, Thackray, Ryan Mintoft, Kieran Bowes and Charlie Williams doing likewise for Kirkby.
In sudden death, Fishburn’s Tom Shrimpton scored, before Kirkby’s Oliver Landy saw his spot-kick superbly saved by Dan Jinks.
• Kirkbymoorside Juniors will hold their annual general meeting on May 21, at 7pm, at the Kirkbymoorside Recreation Club. Everyone is welcome.
Their annual presentation day will be held on Sunday, July 15, from noon to 4pm. There will be lots of fun activities and prizes to be won. Everyone is welcome.
The club are seeking sponsors for kits for the 2012/13 season. The club have 11 teams in all and sponsorship will last a minimum of two years. Anyone interested is asked to phone Paul Magson for details on 07971 414695.
• Abby McGill’s four first-half goals helped fire Pickering Town under-12s to promotion in an 8-4 victory over Woodthorpe Wanderers.
The Pikes youngsters will compete in the York Mitchell Sports League’s first division again next season.
McGill scored twice within four minutes of the kick-off and got two more before the break thanks to good work from Luke Balderson and Tom Richardson.
A fine solo run then led to a Luke Hornby goal before Richardson burst through from midfield to claim the hosts’ sixth.
Balderson’s shot was later handled and he claimed his 61st goal of the season from the penalty spot.
Another spot-kick was then awarded when Hornby was brought down, following a Travis Gough through ball.
Goaleeper Tom Poor stepped up this time and, while his initial effort was saved, he followed up to claim his first-ever goal from the rebound.
That effort represented the team’s 207th goal of the season, with promotion confirmed after Tadcaster’s draw at Haxby.
Coach Richard Poor said: “The boys have played excellent football throughout the season and should be extremely proud of their achievements.”
Three days earlier, Brooklyn U12s had prevented Pickering from going up a game earlier when Tom Walsh, James Allan and Josh Berry were on target in a 3-0 victory.
Berry also netted in the U13s’ 3-2 triumph over York Cubs, along with Bradley Freer and Jack Boyd.
A Freer double and one from man-of-the-match Iain Kerr, meanwhile, accounted for Fulford 3-1.
Man-of-the-match Ethan Oakes got Brooklyn U8 Lions ‘A’s consolation in a 2-1 defeat to York RI but Oliver Towse (2) and Matthew Lock were then on target in the second game – meaning the team that failed to score a goal last season ended their latest campaign with more than 80.
The ‘B’ team finished their season with a 3-2 defeat to York RI despite a goal from Emily Cooper and Dean Fox’s man-of-the-match performance.
Elsewhere, goals from Lewis Eustace (4), Lucas Davison (2), Alex Lilly (2) and David Holt earned Kirkbymoorside U12s a 9-1 victory over Thornton-le-Dale U12s.
• Brooklyn Juniors are looking for new committee members, with vacancies for a club secretary and minutes secretary among other roles.
