Malton School have had super success on the golf course – with victory in the Yorkshire regional final of the National Schools Team Championships.

Malton’s three-man team of, above, from left, Jack Hugill and James Mayne, of Year 12, and Lewis Delaney, of Year 13, won the English Schools’ Golf Association competition held in Halifax.

They now go forward to represent Yorkshire at the National Schools’ Finals, to be held at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire on July 11. The competition comprised a team of three playing stableford rules off full handicaps, with the two best scores to count and the third score to decide ties.

Delaney, with a handicap of 12, and Mayne, whose handicap is 15, play for Malton & Norton Golf Club, and Hugill, with a handicap of 11, plays for Kirkbymoorside GC.

The trio previously won the North Yorkshire leg of the competition with scores of 38 and 38, ahead of Manor School, York, with scores of 38 and 30.

The Yorkshire final was then played at Low Laithes GC last Thursday, and Malton School again won with scores of 37 and 36 in atrocious conditions, beating goal specialists Balby Sports College, from Doncaster, by one shot.
