LUKE Balderson’S goal 10 minutes into the first half was enough to send Pickering Town under-12s into the final of the Scarborough & District FA Junior Minor (U12s) Cup.

Balderson fired in from close range following Thomas Richardson’s pass and this proved to be the only goal in a 1-0 win over Burlington Jackdaws.

The young Pikes endured some nervy moments later on as Burlington pressed for an equaliser, but they held on to set up a final against Ayton U12s.

The latter edged Thornton-le-Dale U12s 4-3 after extra time of their semi-final – which would have been a great final – in front of a crowd of 95 at Ayton on Sunday afternoon.

Tom Fletcher-Varey fired Ayton ahead from 10 yards, but Harvey D’Alquen equalised and Jimmy Weldonby put Thornton ahead four minutes into the second half. A second D’Alquen goal doubled the visitors’ lead and they missed two glorious opportunities to go further ahead.

Ten minutes from time, Josh Penny pulled a goal back for Ayton and deep into stoppage time Bradley Hodgson equalised with the help of a deflection.

Extra time was end to end and a second goal by Ayton’s man of the match, Fletcher-Varey, four minutes into the second period put his side into next month’s final.

The Scarborough & District FA Senior Minor (U16s) final will be contested by FC Seamer and Scarborough Athletic.
