Malton & Norton Under-19s Colts comfortably reached the next round of the Yorkshire Cup with a 55-12 win over Scarborough.

Malton’s forwards established a platform from which half-backs Harry Owston and Chuck Ramsey were able to dictate the game.

Good driving from Ali Coe and Tom Parsons created quick ball and a midfield break from Ali Heard put winger Tim Sharples over in the corner.

A lapse in defence saw Scarborough reply in an even first quarter, but Malt extended their lead as Chuck Ramsey glided over for the first of his two tries, which were followed by touchdowns from Coe (2), full-back Tom Clarke, Charlie Reed, ploughing over, and back-rower Eddie Hampshire – who was returning from injury but suffered a recurrence to his shoulder problem in the act of scoring.

Heard had a good day with his goal-kicking as he and Clarke enjoyed their second win in 24 hours – both having played for Yorkshire on Saturday.

Defensive organisation will be an area to work on ahead of what is likely to be a more challenging next round.

Goals were the difference as Malton & Norton U17s were knocked out of the Yorkshire Cup by a 19-17 loss to high-riding Guisborough.

Three tries apiece was a fair reflection on the run of play, but the visitors landed two conversions to one in reply by James Bulmer. Guisborough are sitting top of the Yorkshire Junior Colts League and Malton should be encouraged by the fact this was a game they could have won. Malt’s try scorers were Adam Durrant, Charlie Darmody and Rob Dempsey.

Malton & Norton U14s lost 42-19 at Driffield after conceding five tries without reply in the first half.

Malt were slower and guilty of ball watching, and strong defence from man-of-the-match Tom Morrison was the only reason they weren’t further behind.

Malton increased the intensity in the second half and started to win collisions and the scrum improved, and the team began to make inroads with the ball in hand.

Ben Tenge twice weaved home and, although a rare second-half foray from Driffield gave them their only score in the half, strong running from Will Hampshire and clever passing gave James Wood a run to the line for a try and his second conversion.

Malton & Norton U12s lost 35-7 in a tough encounter against Selby.

Hosts Malton began brightly with the forwards to the fore, but Selby were sharper to the breakdown and capitalised on Malton lapses from loose play. Selby pressure garnered a convincing lead in the second quarter, but Malt, led by Will Worswick, George Turnbull and Aiden McCourt, never gave up and were rewarded with a well-worked try set up by the impressive Jordan Smith and finished off by the improving Paddy Morrison.

Fine attacking rugby with accurate passing aplenty brought Malton & Norton U10s a great 8-2 victory against Selby ‘B’, though they lost 3-1 to Selby ‘A’.

First-half tries against Selby ‘B’ came from Ben Edwards, with his first of the season with a superb drive, Peter Hudson, Arthur Aston (2), Oliver Kelsey (2), after good tackling from the Malton team, and Thomas Barker.

Selby fought back in the second half and got two tries, but Malton had the last say through Billy Johnson.

The second game was close, with both teams playing exciting rugby. Malton were unlucky to fall two tries behind but responded positively, with Peter Hudson speeding in. Malton looked for the draw but Selby broke away to seal victory late on.

Malton & Norton U8s were split into two teams to give everyone a run and won one game and lost one against Selby. Excellent tagging and defence gleaned an 8-2 win with tries by William Cussins (4), George Baldwin, Hugo Dahlgren, Myles Collingwood and Ben North. Selby then upped their game to win 7-1, Ewan Harrison on the mark for Malt. Mathew King was awarded captain for his determination.
