TWO teams from Ryedale School and one from Malton School are new Scarborough & District basketball champions.
Ryedale’s Year 9 team travelled to Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering, where they beat Graham School 32-4 in the semi-finals, with Dan Peace standing out, and Malton School – who have provided a tough challenge throughout the year – 28-18 in the final.
Ryedale only had a four-point lead at half-time but a much stronger second half, with Kieran Bowes and Matt Butler exceptional, saw them seal a third successive district championship.
Ryedale’s Year 10s played their district finals at Malton School. They comfortably beat Scalby School 48-12 in the semi-final, with Peter Pittaway and Ross Leckenby scoring well, and then faced Lady Lumley’s in the final.
A very strong first half, with Liam Cade scoring the majority of the points for the ‘B’ team, meant Ryedale went in leading 27-4. The ‘A’ teams then played out a competitive second half, but with Peter Pittaway and Cameron Bringloe- Holmes again shining, Ryedale ran out 42-12 victors.
Both Ryedale teams progress to the North Yorkshire county finals next month.
Malton School triumphed at Year 11 level.
They had previously edged out Lady Lumley’s 11-9 and Ryedale School 19-18 in thrilling qualifiers and, having progressed to the district finals, they were in ruthless form to beat Graham School 48-4 and then Filey School 38-12. Will Spencer and Russ Quinn were unstoppable throughout.
District champions Norton College beat Ryedale, Malton, and Pickering’s Lady Lumley’s schools to lift the Ryedale & Whitby partnership under-13s seven-a-side football tournament at Malton School.
Ryedale beat Lady Lumley’s and Malton 2-0, with Ryan Watson (3) and Keelan Simpson getting the goals, but a late own goal saw them lose 1-0 to Norton, who ended with a 100 per cent record.
Ryedale School’s Year 10 netball team comfortably beat George Pindar College 25-6 to reach the final of the Scarborough & District Cup. A star performances came from Celeste Craggs.
Meanwhile, Ryedale School beat Malton School 2-0 in the Year 10 Ryedale & Whitby partnership hockey tournament with goals from Hannah Crowther and Josie Morgan.
However, they had already lost 3-0 to a strong Whitby College team.
Five cross-country runners from Malton School braved wintry weather in Cumbria to represent the Scarborough & District team in the Northern Inter-School Cross Country Championships.
Each runner showed outstanding determination in the freezing conditions and finished in respectable positions. Noah Jackson finished 20th in the Year 7 boys’ race, Will Spencer was 15th and Tom Everitt 53rd in the inter boys, and Christiana Pain was 28th and Lottie Simpson 54th in the inter girls.
Meanwhile, children from West Heslerton, Malton, Norton, Foston, Terrington and St Mary’s primary schools came together for a gymnastics workshop.
Children from Years 1 to 6 took part in a range of fun activities including vaulting and sequence work. They also had a go at some floor skills including arabesques, cartwheels and headstands.
The afternoon was organised by Cath Stone, the school sport coordinator at Norton College and her sports leaders.
