Malton School’s Year 7 basketball team put in an excellent display to beat Ryedale rivals and be crowned Scarborough & District champions at Scalby School. Area winners Malton eased through their district semi-final against Scalby 26-2, with William Hainsworth and Oliver Hildreth playing key roles, while an in-form Ryedale School saw off Graham School 18-14, with Gary Moody starring.
Ryedale also began the final brightly and led at half-way. However, Malton came storming back with some great counter attack play, backed up by solid defence, to win 23-12.
Ryedale School’s Year 10s stormed to Ryedale & Whitby partnership tournament triumph at Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering. Ryedale beat the hosts 48-9, with Jed Taylor-Brown, Jeremy Underwood and Peter Pittaway playing well, and Norton College 38-2, Jake Woodward and Cameron Bringloe-Holmes shining.
Ryedale School’s Year 8s also qualified for the Scarborough & District finals via their partnership tournament at Malton School. Ryedale lost to Norton College 14-10 but beat Eskdale and Malton convincingly, drew 10-10 with Lady Lumley’s and then beat Caedmon 28-0 in the final game. Rory Talling and James Rule were outstanding throughout.
Meanwhile, Ryedale primary school teams from Welburn, St Mary’s, Malton CP, Rillington, Langton and Luttons competed in a basketball competition for the Derwent Arms Shield.
The two section winners, Welburn and Rillington, go through to the partnership finals in March, but it was Rillington who took home the trophy after getting the upper hand in the second half of the final to win 8-4.
Ryedale School’s Year 9 netball team won a strong Ryedale & Whitby partnership tournament on home turf. The hosts won every game, beating Lady Lumley’s, Malton, Norton and Eskdale schools, and now progress to the district finals with high hopes of winning. Rosie Collier and Eliza Dwyer were outstanding throughout.
Ten Ryedale School runners competed for the Scarborough & District team at the North Yorkshire cross-country competition at Caedmon School, Whitby – with Maurice Calton-Seal, Nathan Smith, and Tyler and Jade Hutchinson qualifying to compete for North Yorkshire in the English schools’ event. In the junior boys’ race, Calton Seal finished fifth, Smith ninth and Callum Harrison 28th. In the junior girls’ race, Illona Berriman finished in 31st, Grace Walker 32nd and Mhairi Maxwell 35th.
In the intermediate race, Tyler Hutchinson was fifth – a great achievement running against boys a year older – and Guy Harris came 28th. In the girls’ intermediate race, Jade Hutchinson was 10th and Celeste Craggs 29th.
