THE winning formula still eludes Malton & Norton Under-19s, who lost 27-5 at leaders Old Brodleians in the Colts Premier League.
With the advantage of a severe slope in the first half, Malton dominated the early exchanges without reward.
Brods came away with three points from a penalty on their first major sortie into the Malt 22 and soon added an unconverted try.
Malt captain Tom Parson and Chuck Ramsey led from the front and Tim Sharples and Joe Godliman made many breaks from the back but a lack of clinical finishing saw good chances go begging.
Brods extended their lead when two Malt defenders made a hash of defending a kick and the ball ended up in the hands of a winger who dashed to the line.
A well-organised and stronger Halifax outfit always threatened with ball in hand after the break and yet another defensive error saw them stretch their lead with an unconverted try. Malton’s only score came when a great chase by Joe Robinson saw the winger out-run the defence to go over in the corner. But Old Brods scored the final points of the game.
Malton Colts’ final league match is at The Gannock, against Ionians, on January 29.
Malton & Norton U16s got back to winning ways with a 24-19 victory at Castleford.
A sleepy Malton were taken by surprise as Castleford ran in two quick converted tries.
They rose from their stupor just in time and winger Joe Leak took the back line on around the outside and sneaked a try in on the touchline.
Malt kept the pressure up and a determined Josh Peirson scrambled over the line. Malt were now camped in the opposition half and Jack Young sliced through the defence and crossed the line.
Alex Caine converted for a 19-14 half-time lead.
In the second period, Young crossed again but Castleford had the last word with a try. Malton travel to Ripon this weekend.
Malton & Norton U13s won 34- 17 at Pocklington.
The first try came from great handling between both forwards and backs, the ball quickly moving to Jonny Bayes on the wing who produced a fabulous finish.
Bayes would get another, dodging, ducking and weaving his way to the corner but, inbetween, Pocklington’s right winger scored a couple on his way to a hat-trick.
Tom Wright scored twice and was involved in the final try as Rory Talling went over.
Malton & Norton U10s produced a disciplined display to beat Pocklington twice. A 2-1 victory in the first game came with tries from Alex Chalton and Adam Finlinson.
They showed their tryscoring instincts in the second encounter, coming out 4-0 on top.
Oliver Kelsey’s fine turn of speed scored the only try of the first half but they kicked on in the second period.
Finlinson was the quickest to a loose ball to win possession, with the ball being passed out to Billy Johnson, who showed some side-stepping skills to elude the Pocklington defence to go over the whitewash.
Johnson soon scored again after winning the ball in a scrum near the Pocklington try line to score, then Arthur Aston scored, again after winning the ball in a scrum five metres out from the Pocklington try line.
Malton & Norton U8s secured two great wins – beating Pocklington 7-4 and Scarborough 8-4.
Tries in the first game came from Mathew King, George Baldwin (3), Presley Carr (2) and William Cussins. Carr, another Baldwin hattrick and four from Cussins wrapped up the second match.
Malton & Norton U7s lost twice to Pocklington but beat Scarborough.
The first game against Pock ‘A’ was lost 5-4 with Alex Clarke and Toby Welch scoring one each and Benjamin Brambles scoring twice.
They saw off Scarborough 6-4 after Lysander Duree crossed three times, Robbie Knaggs scored twice and Toby Hudson finished the scoring with a fine run.
But they went down narrowly 6-5 against Pock ‘B’. Crossing for Malton were Welch (2) and Duree, James Stone and Knaggs with one each.
