Malton & Norton Under-11s ended as joint-winners of the Leeds Carnegie Flagship Festival.
The tournament was held at the former Aviva Premiership club’s Kirkstall training centre, with trophies presented at their Headingley ground ahead of Carnegie’s Championship match against Cornish Pirates.
The weather was appalling yet the Ryedale outfit played some superb rugby against Otley, Keighley and Dinnington to then meet Sheffield in the semi-final.
Malton won the tie 2-1 thanks to a golden try in extra time to secure a place in the final against Sandal.
A white knuckle game followed and the Malton players really had to dig deep – in the closing minutes Sandal crossed the line only to be denied the points because Malton held up the ball.
The final ended scoreless, with both teams heading over to Headingley to collect their rewards.
The winning squad, who are pictured at Headingley with their co-winners from Sandal, comprised Alex Ball, George Breese, Joe Browne, Jack Clark, Ronan Fenwick, Rob Firby, Matthew Jefferson, Archie Johnson, Tom Jones, Iain Oakley, Archie Peckitt, Andre Robson, Francis Rowe, Max Twiddle, Cameron Wainwright, Ted Wainwright.
Also pictured are Malton U11s coach James Browne, back left, Sandal’s coach, and Leeds Carnegie’s community coach and former dual-code international, John Bentley, back right.
