BROOKLYN Under-16s had only the bare 11 players for their clash with York Minor League table-toppers Rawcliffe - but gave their best display of the season to end the visitors’ unbeaten record.

From start to finish the home side showed great character and determination en route to a 2-1 win.

Brooklyn took the lead through right-back Joel Berry after he pounced on the rebound at the far post after Harvey Townley effort was saved.

Rawcliffe pushed for an equaliser but the back four remained solid and the tremendous work-rate of the midfield allowed the visitors limited time and space.

As the second half began, Brooklyn dealt with the strong wind well by playing some neat and tidy football from back to front in their 4-5-1 formation.

Keeper Josh Ellis - the joint man-of-the-match with Jack Boyd - pulled off several superb saves to keep the visitors at bay before a deflected free-kick found the net to bring the scores level.

As the game drew to an exciting conclusion, Brooklyn’s excellent attitude and work-rate paid off as, with eight minutes remaining, they grabbed the winner through a superb finish by lone striker Harvey Townley.

Strong goalkeeping from Flo McManus and faultless defending from girl-of-the-game Hollie Troop could not prevent Heslerton U15s Ladies losing 2-0 at Wetherby in an otherwise even York Girls League Cup tie.

Heslerton U14s fell 6-1 to Hunmanby in the Scarborough Minor League, whereas Dan Ward hit a hat-trick as Kirkbymoorside U14s won 6-0 at Strensall in the York Minor League.

Oliver Magson, Jack Edwards and James Farrow also scored.

Thomas Fairburn (2), Jordan Anderson, Ethan Crusher, Jack Biggins and Lewis Garbutt shared the plunder as Kirkbymoorside U13s won 6-2 at Holts in the Scarborough Minor League.

Another fine team performance saw Brooklyn Girls U12s beat Goole 5-0.

Good football brought first-half goals from Millie Crick, Emily Cooper and Shauna Yates.

Brooklyn continued to dominate the second half and scored again through player-of-the-match Florence Pegrum and Rosie Smith.

Hard-working Heslerton U10s played an exciting game at Phoenix FC despite freezing conditions.

Phoenix went ahead before Heslerton upped the pace after some positional changes at half-time, with Hayden Williamson netting a fantastic goal, while man-of-the-match George Heap made some outstanding saves.

Heslerton U9s were unable to find an equaliser to get a share of the spoils with Goldsborough.

Hessy began brightly with Oliver Barnett making strong runs from deep and he nearly opened the scoring with a great shot that went just over.

Goldsborough scored twice before Heslerton netted as Welburn put the ball through to McCann who ran clear on goal and finished brilliantly into the top corner.

Heslerton U8s earned a deserved victory at Hunmanby.

Second-half goals from Myles Johnson and Rio Howden saw Hessy home, with some fantastic saves at the other end from Jake Allardice bringing him a clean sheet and the man-of-the-match award.

Hunmanby hung on to edge the second game, thanks to goals either side of Beck Hutchinson’s reply.

Thornton-le-Dale U7s enjoyed a good win over a battling Heslerton U7s. Oliver Stanton grabbed a goal for the Blues, with Josh Cass their man of the match.

In the second game, Thornton again went in front, with Kai Wilson, man-of-the-match Oliver Dade and Warren Stanton all going close for the visitors with no luck.

• JOSH DELANEY was named man of the match for his two great goals and excellent performance in Old Malton St Mary’s Under-11s’ comprehensive York & Ryedale Mitchell League win at York RI.

Old Malton took charge from the off and soon took the lead as Kallum Moston’s cross looped over the keeper and into the net.

Josh Mann doubled the advantage soon after and further goals from Delaney, with powerful strike that went in off the bar, and Nathan Dolphin made it 4-0 at the half-time interval.

Dolphin went on to complete a hat-trick in the second half and further goals from Alex Horton, with a header, Connor Biggins, with a fine strike into the far corner, and Delaney, with another piledriver which again powered in off the bar, completed the 9-0 rout.

It was a good team performance, with Saints creating several more chances whenever they passed the ball well.

Brooklyn U11s, from division two, gave division one outfit Rawcliffe a fright in the York & Ryedale Mitchell League Cup before going down 5-3.

Rawcliffe took an early lead from a corner but the visitors equalised through Matthew Lock and went ahead with a header from Lucas Croft.

A superb long-range effort from Oliver Towse then made it 3-1 to the home team and a shock looked on.

However, the hosts pulled back a goal just before half-time and in the second period they played some excellent football, with two quick goals giving them the lead.

Brooklyn battled well and played good football themselves but Rawcliffe scored a fifth goal to give them breathing space and, try as they might, the hosts could not find a way back into the game.

Hard-working duo Jay Jackson and Dylan Dykes were joint men of the match for Brooklyn, whose whole team did well.
