RYEDALE School have been crowned English Schools’ fell running champions.

A year ago, Ryedale brought home team gold in the Year 8/9 boys’ category, with Elliot Hutchinson playing a key role.

This time, in the championships held on the fells above Mythlymroyd in Wales, Hutchinson earned the individual title in his age group, with his gold success being one of four medals won by Ryedale, which was enough to earn them the overall title.

Ryedale’s Year 7 contingent finished second in their team competition, with Martha Calton-Seal gleaning a fantastic silver medal too. Other Year 7 team members were Finnian Hutchinson, who finished eighth, Noah Gittens, who was 11th, and Herbert Antcliffe, who came 13th.

Nathan Smith continued his fine form to bag another silver medal in his race, with Maurice Calton-Seal in 23rd place, while Abi Smith finished strongly in the top half of her field.

Meanwhile, Ryedale School’s Year 11 rugby union team have continued their dominance of local school competition by winning the Scarborough & District 10-a-side tournament for the third year running.

Ryedale beat Malton School 24-0 in the final, with captain Owen Hayhurst picking up the trophy.

Ryedale had also edged Malton in the group stage, coming from 12-0 down to win 24-12 with tries by Ryan Metcalfe (2), Jack Simpson and Ryan Hamblett.

They also saw off Whitby College 31-0 with tries by Hamblett (2), Miles Richardson, Metcalfe and Hayhurst, before beating Graham School 29-0 in the semi-finals in another five-try rout.

Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering, meanwhile, won the Year 7 tournament.

Ryedale School’s Year 9 netball team, led by Ruth Aber, also dominated their district tournament held at Scalby School - winning all nine of their games, conceding only 13 goals in the process. Eliza Powell at centre and Ellie Crowther at goal shooter, as well as captain Aber, excelled throughout.
