MALTON & Norton Under-14s lost out 33-29 to Driffield in a ten-try thriller.

Malt started well and released Jack Villa-Fordon to scorch down the touchline and score in the corner.

Driffield hit back with two quick tries, before quick thinking from Iain Oakley led to him pouncing on a sliced clearance to touch down.

Driffield regained the lead with a try under the posts, but the home backs then put George Austin-Thompson clear to make 19-19 at the break.

In the second half, man of the match Lawrence Blades outpaced the visitors’ defence to cross the whitewash on the right.

Driff came straight back with two converted tries, and not even George Austin-Thompson’s determined run to the line could deny the visitors.

Malton & Norton U12s played a double header against Goole and Beverley at Beverley. Malton beat Goole 30-0 in their first game with Leon Cook easing through a reluctant defence for the opening score. Goole were denied an equalising score by a textbook Max Lane tackle and Cook’s rampaging power got him a second try.

Conor Saxby burrowed through the base of a ruck to touch down to make it 15-0 at half-time. Saxby capitalised on a disrupted Goole put-in, pouncing on a loose ball and Cook completed his hat-trick as a result of a quick tap penalty.

Sophia Stone emerged from a short range maul for a well deserved score.

Malt then beat hosts Beverley 15-10 in a scrappy game.

Saxby pounced on a loose ball out of the back of a home scrum for a 5-0 lead at half-time. Malton were then unsettled by second half injuries to Alastair Keen and Lane and Beverley levelled.

With two minutes remaining Ollie McBeath ran a deceptive angle through the Beverley centres and barged through the full-back to claim a try.

Beverley responded to level the scores again but Saxby crowned an excellent personal performance to take his try haul for the day to four with a match-winning score.
