MALTON & NORTON Under-16s edged past Driffield 7-3 in their opening home game of the season.

They scored their try when Talling drilled a penalty into touch give metres from Driffield's line and a clean catch brought them close to the line. Quick thinking by Newsome so him drive over.

Malton & Norton U14s shut out Huddersfield YMCA in a 53-0 Yorkshire Cup first round victory.

Jack Villa-Fordon got them off and running - taking a pop pass from a tackled team-mate to power under the posts - before Matthew Jefferson kicked the first of four conversions.

The lead increased when flanker Laurie Jackson sprinted to the corner and, as Malton began to dominate, Lawrence Blades and winger George Austin-Thompson (2) added further touchdowns.

Iain Oakley scored just before the break and Malton went in 36-0 up. They had to withstand a period of Huddersfield pressure on the resumption but the defence stood firm. Quick-thinking from Villa-Fordon saw him swoop on a loose ball and sprint 50 metres to the posts and Blades and Austin Thompson both ran in further tries to cap a superb effort. Man of the match was Ronan Fenwick.

Malton & Norton U13s breezed past Driffield 43-10.

They got off to a great start when Fabien Masscar powered through the defence, with Adam Finlinson converting. James Boyes made it 12-0 with a great individual run and a third try was added when Oliver Kelsey gathered his own chip to get over the whitewash.

The score became 22-0 as Josh Britton profited but they conceded on the stroke of half-time after giving away a penalty near their own 10 metre line.

Britton made a break from half way to score in the second half and Boyes added to his tally following a great training ground move. The last try came when Kelsey stepped inside on the wing to split the defence to score.

THE minis section - under-7s to U12s - at Malton & Norton have new playing tops for the new season.

Specially made in Fiji by BLK, the tops are sponsored by Marshall Honda Scarborough and Back2health Kirkbymoorside.

Club spokesman Ian Hepworth said: "The sponsorship deal has allowed us to offer the first batch of tops at a subsidised price. This helps to open rugby union up to all.

"Although the playing season has started we are always looking for new players."

Anyone interested can attend training on Sundays at 10.30am - but check the club website at pitchero.com/clubs/maltonandnorton/ to make sure sessions are on - or email Ian Hepworth, minis co-ordinator, at ij.hepworth@gmail.com
