NATHAN WILLIAMS starred as Pickering Community Junior School's hockey team just missed out on a place in the North Yorkshire finals - Helmsley Primary School pipping them to it.

Pickering 'A' qualified for the Year 5/6 Ryedale & Whitby Partnership finals at Caedmon School by winning the sport cluster tournament at Lady Lumley's School, Pickering.

They continued to play some flowing hockey at Caedmon, with some excellent passing freeing Williams to use his pace and skill to become the team's top goalscorer.

Pickering gained 13 points from their six games, finishing in third place, narrowly missing the county finals by one point.

Helmsley and Ruswarp will represent the partnership in the next round, having finished on 14 and 17 points respectively.

The competing schools at the cluster competition at Lady Lumley's had all improved their play as that event progressed, and it all came down to the last game of the competition between Pickering 'A' and St Joseph's School, who went into their encounter equal on points.

Supporters were kept on tenterhooks throughout as the game swung this way and that. However, with some determined play, Pickering finally won the match 4-3 and the area crown.
