MALTON junior footballer Gabriel McGill has been selected for the England Independent Schools Football Association national elite squad.

The 13-year-old Terrington Hall Preparatory School pupil came through three days of trials in Shrewsbury to win a place in the 33-strong squad that will take part in an Oakham festival this August, where Premier League and Football League academies will provide the opposition.

McGill is an all-round sportsman, who represents North Yorkshire at cricket and has played for the Northern Barbarians rugby union side in the past.

He also holds the Terrington Hall high jump record.

Headmaster Jon Glen said: "Gabriel is head of school at Terrington Hall and we are very proud of his achievements on and off the field. It is tremendous that he has secured a place in the ISFA national elite squad, competing against all the best independent school footballers in the country.

"He is a very modest, level-headed young man and I’m sure he will further his sporting achievements over the coming years."

Chelsea's Frank Lampard and Victor Moses, currently of Liverpool, both attended ISFA fee-paying member schools in the past, as did Celtic's England goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
