RYEDALE School's Year 10s girls' rugby union team became East Yorkshire champions after a thrilling finale to the tournament at Driffield Rugby Club.

Ryedale, having qualified as district winners, won their first two games and knew victory in their showdown with Wolfreton School would then give them the crown.

Defences dominated as a tight and tense game finished 0-0, leading to golden point extra time.

The game became end-to-end, with both teams defending their line well and then breaking away. On one such occasion, Wolfreton were five metres away from the try-line, but the Ryedale forwards turned the ball over and passed it out wide to Elke Morgan.

She broke early tackles and, with the whole Wolfreton team in hot pursuit, ran the length of the pitch to score the winner.

Earlier, Ryedale had started with a 40-0 win over Kelvin Hall School, from Hull, 40-0 with five tries by Hattie Braithwaite and one each for Niamh Williams and Alice Morbey.

Immense tackling and regular breaks by Ava Gillies helped them to then beat Headlands School, from Bridlington, 15-0, to set up the showdown with Wolfreton.

The Ryedale girls will now play in the Yorkshire finals at Wetherby.

Meanwhile, Ryedale School's Key Stage 3 girls' football team won their Scarborough & District Cup semi-final against Caedmon School.

Ryedale were 6-3 ahead with five minutes left and they hung on to reach the final despite conceding two goals.
