MALTON & Norton Under-15s came away from Driffield with a 22-10 victory.

A top-drawer performance saw the Ryedale youngsters attack into a gusty wind in the first half but they found themselves under immense pressure from a strong Driffield side.

Stout tackling and quick line speed saw the hosts fumble the ball, however, and Josh Wainwright raced over the line to score.

They were soon camped on their own line, though, and Driffield’s centre ran through Malt’s defence and gathered his own kick to score unopposed.

They made changes at half-time and, playing with the wind, upped the tempo. Man of the match Jamie Knaggs stole a throw and set up a platform for the forwards to drive over - Josh Spittal awarded the try.

Driffield started to lose patience and Wainwright grabbed yet another loose ball to gallop in for a second score. With time running out, Saki Kaitoga went on a barnstorming run to score under the posts. Rory Talling added the extras.

Malton & Norton U10s played three games in Beverley.

They won the first 20-15 with tries from George Baldwin (2), William Cussins and Jack Towler but lost the second 20-10 - Presley Carr and Dorzen Dukolli getting on the board.

Good tackling and defensive work from both teams saw the third match end in a 20-20 draw. Baldwin, Cussins, Dukolli and Hugo Dahlgren got the tries.

Meanwhile, York’s St Olave’s School scooped the main trophy in Terrington Hall’s 16th annual under-13 rugby union sevens tournament.

A total of 24 schools competed in the largest event of its kind in the north of England.

Decent performances were put in by several Ryedale schools, with St Martin’s Ampleforth winning a place in the Cup semi-finals, hosts Terrington Hall in the Plate semi-finals, Lady Lumley’s, of Pickering, in the Bowl semi-finals, and Ryedale and Malton in the Shield semi-finals. Malton were also the only team to beat champions St Olave’s all day.

The Cup final saw St Olave’s beat Merchiston Castle 29-5, Olave’s having seen off St Martin’s 21-17 in the last four.

Sedbergh beat Easingwold 12-5 in Plate final.

Terrington Hall headmaster Jon Glen said: “My congratulations to all the competitors for an afternoon of outstanding rugby, and to St Olave’s for their well-deserved victory.

“There have been some golden moments, such as Yarm’s sudden-death drop goal in their semi-final against Ryedale, and I must commend Malton for being the only team to beat Cup winners St Olave’s throughout the afternoon.”
