RYEDALE School’s Year 8 basketball team are the new North Yorkshire champions at their age group.
The team won on county finals day held at York College, beating York’s Bootham School in the Year 8 showdown to take the crown.
Ryedale had seen off St Aidan’s School, from Harrogate, in the first game, with Steele Barker and Callum Crosland taking control of proceedings, using their strength under the basket to dominate and set up a 26-18 win.
Against Bootham, they ran out 14-9 winners with Dan Ward named man of the match.
Dave Smith, head coach at York College and of North Yorkshire boys, said: “It was great to see the talent on show and several players impressed with their potential. Several of these players will, I am sure, be part of the North Yorkshire squad for 2014.”
