Angling: Mike Lightfoot wins league’s opening round

Mike Lightfoot drew first blood in Malton & Norton AC’s winter league, winning the opening round at Birkdale Lakes, Terrington, on Sunday with 2lb 4oz.

Fishing opposite the island on the right-hand bank with pole and maggot, he took roach to the 4oz mark.

Ken Dalton pushed the winner all the way with another net of small roach weighing 2lb 3oz.

Norton’s Brian Jordan came good in the York midweek match on the Horseshoe lake at Poppleton fishery, winning with 44lb 4oz.

Alternating between the margin and 12-metre pole line with worm, he accounted for around 30lb of carp plus 14lb of silver fish.

Gerald Chalk secured second place from peg 17 by fishing pole and pellet across to the island to locate 33lb 6oz of carp, leaving Denis Fish in third with 32lb.

Colin McNeil was again to the fore in the Westland’s Angling Club match, this time at Forest Lane Fishery, Alne, with 59lb 6oz. Utilising the mini-method feeder with pellet at peg eight, he attracted carp to the 5lb mark. Brian Pallister was second with 48lb 12oz from peg 34.

Tony Mellor found Primrose Valley Boating Lake’s resident silver fish population in a feeding mood on Monday, netting roach and skimmers with pole at maggot at peg eight on the dam wall to win the Contemptibles match with 14lb 6oz. Ken Herbert was runner-up at peg 24 with 11lb 13oz.

Carp decided the outcome of Friday’s Contemptibles match on the carp lake at Wykeham fishery, with Bill Newsome faring best at peg 19 with 28lb 10oz.

Brian Hewitt and Gary Milne fought it out for second place with the former just getting the nod by virtue of 25lb 2oz to the latter’s 23lb 14oz.
