Battling Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers revel in mudlark

MORE than a dozen Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers competed in the first North Yorkshire/South Durham cross country fixture of the season at Acklam on a course made muddier by showers of rain before and during the races.

Ryan Coventry set the ball rolling in the under-11 event, finishing a good 12th in eight minutes and 11 seconds, while Jack Spence was second in the U15 boys’ race in 10.23.

Charlotte Sanderson also finished second in the ladies’ race in 22.04 with Nicola Booth 26th in 27.36, Hilary Coventry 41st in 29.39, Pat Kirby 46th in 30.10 and Christine Burn 59th in 32.49.

In the men’s race, over double the distance, Stephan Tomaszewski, back running after a foot operation, finished 63rd in 47.06, just pipping Merv Burn, 64th in 47.07. Martyn Coy was 99th in 51.15, Graham Robinson 100th in 51.58, Rob Burn 105th in 52.54 and David Goddard 122nd in 62.57.

Earlier in the day at Richmond, Nik Sutton-Haigh had a very good run to finish 232nd out of 422 runners with Ian Codling 389th in 65.28.
