Running: Phil Richardson’s run return is an excellent one

Phil Richardson returned to racing just five weeks after having an emergency operation to remove his appendix – and was delighted with a top-35 finish in the Filey Beach 10K.

This event starts in Filey’s Country Park, travels down one kilometre of road to the beach, then continues out and back towards Flamborough Head, providing a mixture of hilly and flat terrain. The final kilometre goes from the beach back to the Country Park, and includes a punishing 500-metre climb and a loop of another 500 metres around the headland to the finish.

Race conditions were fine but there was a strong head wind for the first 5k which became a tail wind on the return, and Richardson clocked 46-44 – a fine time considering it was his first run for 10 weeks and so soon after his op.

The in-form Lynn Humpleby could not resist entering a 10K road race in Newquay during a long weekend break in Cornwall.

The out-and-back course gave the runners a challenging hill for first half of the race and a downhill second half and Humpleby returned a time of 47-02.
