Long-ranger beats Pickering Town
2:54pm Wednesday 3rd October 2012 in Sport
Pickering TOWN fell to 18th place in the Northern Counties East League premier division after a 1-0 defeat at Thackley – John Mallinson scoring the goal from the half-way line.
The Pikes spurned a couple of good chances to take the lead in the first half-hour – Liam Shepherd hitting the bar from 16 yards in the seventh minute and Liam Salt having a header well saved by the home ’keeper.
Arran Reid, in the Pickering goal, was called into action to save from Nicky Matthews’ header on the stroke of half-time.
The only goal of the game arrived after 74 minutes when Pikes skipper Simon Sturdy lost possession in the centre circle and the ball fell to Thackley substitute Mallinson, who spotted Reid well off his goal line and lobbed the ball from half-way into the empty net.
Pickering were reduced to 10 men late on when they had Joe Connor sent off.
Pickering: A Reid, T Reid, Gowan, Turnbull, Sturdy, Craig, Dalton (Braithwaite 68), Taylor (Connor 88), Danby, Salt (Rivis 74), Shepherd.
Tonight (Wednesday) the Pikes are at Staveley Miners Welfare (7.45pm) while, on Saturday, they entertain Scarborough Athletic in a North Yorkshire derby.
