Football: Roberts continues to steer Ayton’s happy ship
2:58pm Wednesday 26th September 2012 in Sport
Ayton’s impressive start to the Scarborough & District League division one season under new player-manager Steve Roberts continued with a 3-1 win at Filey Town.
An own goal by Liam Barnes plus an Alex Hamilton strike, after good work by ex-Pickering Town favourite Roberts, put Ayton clear. Jordan Philliskirk replied but Simon Rigg sealed the win.
Ryedale Sports Club gained much needed points with a 4-0 win at Westover Wasps thanks to two goals each by Terry Davison and Adam Hornby in the second half.
Champions West Pier also won 4-0 at Hunmanby United, scoring twice in each half – Martin Cooper and Tommy Barker in the first half, Mikey Hartnett and Sam Hyde in the second.
Newlands Park won by the same scoreline at Eastfield St James thanks to goals by Stafan Moon (2), Jack Hakings and Luke Jenkinson.
Whitby Fishermen were full value for their 4-2 win at Edgehill with goals by Mark Swales, Steve Swales, Jordan Purvis and Sam Bailey. Edgehill scored two late goals by Alex Bowman and Jason Darling.
Seamer Sports beat Fishburn Park Reserves 2-0 with first-half goals by Gary Lawton and Darren Clough.
In the second division, Flixton came from behind to see off Cayton Corinthians 6-2.
Simon Stubbs’ corner deflected in off a defender to put the visitors ahead but Tim Jackson and Keith Skelton turned the game around. Dean Cross equalised with a penalty just before half-time but Flixton got well on top after the break and netted through Skelton (2), to complete his hat-trick, Ian Laing and James Hughes.
In division three, Cayton Reserves and Scalby Reserves shared the points in a ten-goal thriller.
