Angling: Doug Featherstone’s decision pays off
2:57pm Wednesday 26th September 2012 in Sport
Doug Featherstone’s late decision to fish the Barry Lightfoot Memorial Match at Hundred Oaks Lake instead of the Black Horses league match paid dividends as he returned to Norton with the trophy and £40.
Fishing from peg two on the caravan bank with the 11-metre pole and worm, he had carp from the off, taking specimens to the 5lb pound mark to record a winning 55lb 8oz.
The race for second place was a hotly contested affair with only 12oz separating three anglers. Mark Collier’s haul of chub from corner peg 22 prevailed, tipping the scales at 30lb 14oz to push Ken Dalton’s 30lb 10oz net of carp into third and Brian Scott’s 30lb 2oz of carp into fourth.
Phil Roberts got among the skimmers at Foss Hill Fishery to win G B Angling Clubs Tuesday match with 37lb. Sitting at peg three on the 3B Lake and utilising the 10-metre pole with pellet, he attracted samples to the 2lb 8oz mark.
Alan Creaser sat nearby at peg one and opted for a ground-bait feeder approach to tempt 35lb 10oz of skimmers to the net.
Cat food was again the choice bait for Gerald Chalk in the York midweek match at Raker Lakes and again it did not let him down, banking 52lb 4oz of carp on the 13-metre pole from peg 11 on the High Bank.
Gary Thornton secured runners-up place from peg two with 50lb 8oz of pole-and-pellet-caught carp.
Tony Mellor found the Little Tench Lake at Westland’s Fishery to his liking last Friday, top scoring in the final round of the Contemptibles’ summer series with 70lb 3oz. Fishing banded pellet up in the water on the long pole at peg eight, he accounted for carp to the 6lb mark.
Howard Pulford put 49lb 14 oz on the scales and in doing so secured the league title with 53 points, six clear of Mellor.
A forecast of heavy rain has led Malton & Norton AC to take an early decision and relocate Sunday’s Fur and Feather match from the River Derwent to Hundred Oaks Lake, Newton on Derwent.
The draw will take place in the fishery cafe at 9am with fishing 10am to 4pm. Chips and beer will be on offer after the event. For more information, phone Paul Thompson on 01653 618602.
