Trial biking: Benton edged out under White Horse

John Benton
Scarborough `s Gary Collinson grabbed the honours on most cleans from Great Edstone’s comeback kid, John Benton, when Thirsk DMC held their trial at Kilburn under the gaze of the famous old White Horse.
Collinson made his experience tell on the early sections of the good four-lap, 10-section course around the old quarries and woodland, but Benton fought back with great rides on sections four and five, before Collinson bettered him with a score of just four lost on the rocks of seven, Collinson finally nailing the win with 21 cleans to 20.
Young Shane Monkman from Wombleton grabbed the ‘A’ class win from a rejuvenated Chris Jewell by just two marks.
Jewell appeared to be heading for his first win for a while, until attacking the loose climb of section five, spun out to flatten a flag, thus dropping seven marks while Monkman eased through on four separate dabs to a well-earned win.
Collinson had been edged into second bg Guisborough’s Jonathan Taylor a day earlier when Eboracum MC brought their popular series of club trials to a close with a cracking event on the rugged moorland rocks and grassland around Hobb House, Rosedale.
Pocklington’s Richie Kendra won the Inter class from Malton ’s Ben Myers.
Kirkbymoorside ’s Dan and Jack Peace limbered up for the Richmond trial the following day in style. Elder brother Dan amazingly went round unpenalised while Trickbits boy Jack lost just 14 marks, and on the expert sections.
