Snooker: Trophy holders Pickering begin well

Champions Pickering Cons ‘A’ opened the defence of their Malton & Norton League title with a 4-2 win over their ‘C’ team.

Bright Steels also got off to a winning start a 4-2 victory over Pickering Cons ‘D’, who were a player short. New pensioner Mal Piercy beat Chris Leonard 51-35, while Geoff Foxton showed some good form to beat veteran Tony Pape 84-32.

Andy Porter fluked the black to defeat Ernie Burley 61-65, while some excellent pots saw M Gardener beat Dave Burdett 67-33.

Malton Cons ‘C’ and ‘A’ drew 3-3. Dom Spiteri and Steve Pawson played a very entertaining frame, with Pawson leading on the colours and laying a superb snooker behind the pink.

Spiteri fell 23 points behind but stuck to his guns and fought back with fine safety and a couple of snookers, the match turning in his favour when Pawson attempted a thin clip on the pink and missed the ball, Spiteri taking his chance to take the frame 60-51.

John Ruston was given a 50-point start against opposite captain Simon Weatherill but the latter wiped most of it off with a 42 break en route to a 97-62 win.

Dan Pawson potted so well that Phil Hart conceded with four reds remaining, while newcomer Steve Beal showed no nerves on his debut to beat Roger Ward 82-65.
