Malton trainer Fahey to be further lifted by Canada high

Richard Fahey, celebrating a major success in Canada on Sunday with Barefoot Lady, returns to bread and butter fare at Beverley tomorrow and is fancied to figure among the winners.

The Malton trainer won the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes at Woodbine racecourse in Toronto with Barefoot Lady, whose victory under David Moran earned a first prize of $177,000 on behalf of owners Helen and Norman Steele. The four-year-old’s previous success was gained at York in Listed company at the evening meeting at the end of July.

Tomorrow, Fahey can score with nap selection Bahamamay and Anderton, two juveniles with one outing apiece under their belts.

Anderton finished fourth at Thirsk on his debut four weeks ago. He is entitled to go well in the Watch Racing On Sky Channel 432 Maiden Stakes over five furlongs.

Tony Hamilton, rider of Anderton, will also be aboard Bahamamay in the Racing Again Next Tuesday Maiden Auction Stakes.

This big, strapping colt raced a little too generously in the early stages when a creditable third over this course and distance on his debut five weeks ago. There was a lot to like about that performance and, provided he settles a bit better this time, he should be hard to beat.

The Get Married At Beverley Racecourse Handicap may provide Almond Branches with a chance to resume winning ways.

Perhaps the rain-soaked ground was the reason George Moore’s sprinter ran below par at York’s Ebor Festival . Previously a good third on Knavesmire, which came after a Catterick win, Almond Branches should not be written off simply after a modest effort.

The useful-looking Jabhaat (2.30) and Spanish Wedding (4.45), a Goodwood winner who finished a respectable second at Newmarket last time, are two others to note.

At Sandown, the featured Fortune Stakes boasts a six-strong field and three of them are trained in North Yorkshire.

Set The Trend, trained by David O’Meara, was a recent winner at Haydock, Mark Johnston’s Fulbright is as tough as old boots and talented into the bargain, and Gabrial, from the Fahey stable, boasts classy form.

There promises to be little to choose between the trio and preference is for Gabrial, who may have been inconvenienced by stepping up in trip last month and who is teamed up with Richard Hughes for the first time.

Hughes can enjoy a good afternoon. The season’s leading jockey can also win the Racehorse Sanctuary Rescue & Re-Homing Centre Novice Stakes on Montiridge.

The Richard Hannon-trained colt looked a useful performer in the making when scoring at Newbury on his debut. He should make a bold bid, raised in class.

John Gosden can prevail in the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing Maiden Stakes with Nichols Canyon.
