Vale Cricket: Malton & Old Malton in great escape

Malton & Old Malton produced a superb end of season winning double to beat the drop in the HPH York Vale Cricket league division three.

On Saturday they stunned divisional champions Heworth with a stunning eight-wicket win. Heworth totalled 165-9 after being 49-7, Ryan Gaughan taking 3-13 and Oliver Varey 3-38.

Malton, second from bottom, struggled to 19-2 but Steve Fraser (82no) and Max Fraser (52no) swept them to an impressive victory.

However, with Melbourne, the team immediately above them, also winning, Malton went into the following day’s final fixture needing to win to escape relegation.

They did it in style, thrashing Welton & Brough by nine wickets with Fraser once more to the fore. Wayne Cullen took 3-34 as Welton made 169-9 but Malton swept past their score with Shaun Harland (82no) and Morgan Fraser (59no) in top form.

Adrian Brader hoisted Thixendale from the brink of defeat to victory against Copmanthorpe II. Needing 188 to win, Dale were 151-8 when Brader (30no) unleashed a barrage of sixes at the death to snatch a two-wicket win.

Ali Fothergill (73) and Jamie Smith (32no) put on 106 for Westow’s seventh wicket against division two champions Fulfordgate but their team lost by five wickets.

Former Burythorpe star Andy Milner scored 115 and Martin Veyset 71 as Stamford Bridge beat division six champions Stockton & Hopgrove Ii by 112 runs on Sunday.

Malton & Old Malton II were thumped by 108 runs at Hirst courtney II despite three-wicket hauls by Curtis Paterson and Mick Liversidge.
