Teams rolling back years in Senior Cricket League challenge tie

THE clock was turned back 100 years as the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League closed out their centenary celebrations with a ‘Champions’ versus ‘The Rest’ challenge match.

The league’s first-ever season finished with a match between unbeaten champions Easingwold and a team comprising players from their rivals, with ‘The Rest’ winning by 36 runs on September 14, 1912.

In the 2012 re-creation of the game, hosts Easingwold were three-wicket winners over ‘The Rest’ with two balls to spare thanks to two successive sixes by champagne moment winner Dan Copeland.

The Rest, made up of players from Thirsk, Sessay, Ripon, Northallerton and Knaresborough, batted first and enjoyed a 58-run stand between Sessay’s Matt Till (33) and Ripon’s Rob Taylor (35).

Stuart Carey, of Knaresborough, then hit 48 but lost a series of partners as Charles Ramsey (3-29) feasted on the middle order.

Jonathon Corcoran, who had a spell in the York Senior League with Heworth , then made 22 before a good knock by Sessay’s Liam Carver (39no) hoisted the total to 219.

Ramsey then showed his batting talent with 42 at the top of the order and he shared a 62-run stand for the third wicket with Matt Turnbull, who won the man of the match award with a fine 78.

With Carver taking 3-42, The Rest seemed to be on course to repeat their 1912 victory but Copeland and Martin Piercy showed their experience to set up a fine climax to the match.

Their unbroken stand of 43 steered Easingwold to victory as Copeland struck the third and fourth balls of the final over out of the ground.
