Burdett: It just wasn’t Woodhouse Grange's day

SKIPPER Steve Burdett said his Woodhouse Grange side had to “hold their hands up” as they lost their Yorkshire Tea National Village Cup final at Lord’s.

The Sutton-on-Derwent side, five times finalists in the premier competition for village outfits, lost by six wickets to Hertfordshire-based Reed at the home of English cricket.

Burdett, on his fourth appearance in the final, was left ruing a rocky patch in the middle of the Woodhouse innings which saw them collapse from 56-0 to 87-5 and 109-6.

A total of 184 was not enough to bring the trophy back to Yorkshire and the skipper congratulated Reed for executing their gameplan.

Burdett said: “We got off to a great start but we just had a bad patch in the middle. All credit to Reed, the best side won.

“It just wasn’t our day. They performed very well with the bat and ball. It wasn’t through lack of trying. They had their gameplan, and stuck to it.”

He added: “If we had set a total of 200 plus, which is what we should have set, it would have been enough.

“Ultimately, we didn’t bowl great. They batted well and, sometimes, you just have to hold your hands up and say we didn’t quite come to the mark.”

Tom Young, who top-scored for Woodhouse with 42, added: “It was just unbelievable (arriving at Lord’s).

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It is like playing at Wembley and it was absolutely brilliant.

“It was nerve racking coming into bat. I was bricking it.”
