Super start at Ayton for ex-Pickering Town's Steve Roberts

Former Pickering Town favourite Steve Roberts began his reign as Ayton player-manager in fine style as his side stunned hosts Ryedale Sports Club 5-0 on the opening day of the Scarborough & District League season.

An own goal got them off the mark and strikes followed for Alex Hamilton, Roberts himself, and a brace by debutant Steve Dorey, the man of the match. Heath Brown impressed for Ryedale.

Champions West Pier won 2-1 at Eastfield St James, though the win was marred by what was feared to be a serious injury to Paul Provins.

A Martin Cooper cross was superbly headed in by Tommy Barker, before Eastfield got on top.

Debutant Pier ’keeper Jon Hyde pulled off a string of outstanding saves and Daz Crawford cleared an effort off the line before Chris Dove equalised with a penalty after he had been fouled.

Pier got back in the ascendancy after half-time and got the winner when Danny Cooper headed in a Barker corner for the match-winner.

In division two, Rillington Athletic conceded a goal in each half in a 2-0 loss to West Pier Reserves, Dave Crawford and Kyle Spivey on target.

Last season Pier lost all 20 league games and let in 98 goals.

Snainton lost 3-0 at home to fellow promoted side Falsgrave with goals by Paul Brady and Richard Tolliday (2).

Cayton Corinthians lost 11-2 at home to Edgehill Reserves and Flixton won 1-0 at Scalby.

In division three, Ayton Reserves impressed in beating Cayton Corinthians Reserves 5-1 thanks to goals by Daniel Bywater (2), Mark Craven (2), and the impressive David Ledden. Debutant Kieran Friet was the Ayton man of the match. Shaun Barrass scored Cayton’s consolation.
