MANY of the 28 entrants produced top performances as Pickering Running Club held their annual club championships in Dalby Forest over a dry but cold 10-kilometre course.
Sam Holtby, veteran Nick Cousins and Jayson Cavill headed a leading group of seven in what was the most competitive club championship race in years.
Martin Connell, Steve Watson and Richard Todd competed strongly but class told in the final third as Cavill claimed victory in 41 minutes 22 seconds. Watson powered through to win the veterans’ competition in 44-05, with the finish coming too soon for 2011 champion Connell (44-11).
Mike Hetherton (45-20) regained the super-veterans’ trophy from Mike Wilson (46-23), both having used their experience to let the younger men set the early pace for them Others: Cousins 44-27, Andy Mitchell 44-31, Holtby 45-12, Richard Todd 45-47, Andy Harvey 46-41, Simon Ridley 47-10, Mark Chappell 50-29, Steve Hampshire 51-08, Dave Simpson 53-18.
Young pretender Lynn Humpleby gave it everything to win the ladies’ race in 46-45 and see off defending champion Kim England (47-23).
A slightly off-colour Lorraine Laycock had set the pace over the first three kilometres and put in her usual strong effort to claim the veteran crown in 49-15.
