No panic for Reid as Pickering Town wait for victory

Pickering TOWN boss Jimmy Reid isn’t hitting the panic button yet even though his side are yet to record their first win of the new season.

The Pikes followed up two defeats in the Northern Counties East League premier division with a 1-1 draw at Jarrow Roofing Boldon CA in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The replay was being held at the Recreation Ground last night (Tuesday) and Reid was hoping his side could progress to a preliminary round clash at home to Evo-Stik Northern Premier League outfit Farsley AFC. Having also lost two squad players – goalkeeper Dave Bramley rejoining Barton Town Old Boys and youngster Eddie Cass going to Bridlington Town – he is still refusing to get too concerned at a lacklustre start to the campaign.

“Before long we will give a team a good hiding when we start putting the chances away,” Reid said. “There is no need for concern yet.”

Pickering’s clash in South Tyneside at the weekend was an interesting game which flowed from end to end, although the visitors had the majority of both the play and chances.

The game came alive in the last couple of minutes with the Pikes taking an 89th-minute lead when Lewis Taylor supplied a lovely through ball for Tom Fenwick to latch onto and score with a low shot into the bottom corner.

Deep into stoppage time, however, the home side equalised when the Pikes failed to defend a corner and allowed home skipper Michael Hedley to net with a fine header.

Pickering: A Reid, T Reid, Gowan, Hillier, Sturdy, Shepherd (Taylor 56), Baxter, Connor, Stewart (Dalton 65), Salt (Fenwick 75), Craig. Sub not used: Readman.

At Retford United in the league eight days ago, the Pikes once again were guilty of missing several good chances created and allowed the home side to score the all important goal after 40 minutes when Andy Walkden netted with a right-foot shot following an Adam Scott corner.

The Pikes did much better in the second half but failed to take advantage.

Pickering: A Reid, T Reid, Craig, Hillier, Sturdy, Stewart, Connor (Taylor 83), Baxter (Readman 87), Salt, Danby (Gowan 62).

Pickering travel to Arnold Town on Saturday (kick off 3pm).

The league game at Bridlington Town, postponed because of last night’s FA Cup replay, has been re-arranged for Tuesday, September 11.
