Yorkshire cricketing stalwart Alan Boothroyd stalwart dies

TRIBUTES have been paid to Yorkshire cricketing stalwart Alan Boothroyd, who has died suddenly at the age of 87.
Boothroyd played for Sheriff Hutton in the York & District Senior League and, in recent years, was a familiar face as a spectator at Stamford Bridge’s Low Catton Road ground.
League secretary Albert Pattison said: “Alan’s first taste of cricket came at Ledsham, where the family farm overlooked the cricket field. Farming work took him to Stanley, near Wakefield. While playing there in the early 50s he was offered a trial match by Yorkshire, but had to decline due to milking duties.”
After living for a spell in Garforth, Boothroyd moved to Strensall in 1965 and the following year he joined Sheriff Hutton.
On his retirement from cricket he took up bowls, played for Strensall and then from 1983 for Stamford Bridge. At the age of 68, he won the Lord Mayors Bowls Trophy.
A funeral service will be held at St John The Bapist Church in Stamford Bridge, today, at 2pm.
