Simon Dyson poised to stage Castle coup

DESPITE a wobbly inward nine York’s Simon Dyson remained in a challenging position going into today’s third round of the Scottish Open.

Following on from his first round four-under-par 68, world number 46 Dyson yesterday carded a three-under-par 67 that left him five shots adrift of joint second round leaders, Italy’s Francesco Molinari and Alexander Noren of Sweden.

However, Malton & Norton Golf Club’s Dyson was on cue for even more of a corker of a score as he initially set about ripping through the Castle Stuart course in Inverness yesterday.

After negotiating the first hole with a trademark par, he bagged his first birdie on the second hole, repeating that feat from the first round.

The magic continued from the 34-year-old.

Three more birdies followed by the time he reached the turn, Dyson collecting shots at the sixth and seventh holes and also at the ninth to take him to four-under for the day and eight-under for the tournament.

But as much as the first nine holes were impressive, the inward nine proved inconsistent.

His first bogey of the opening two rounds might not have arrived until the 13th hole – coincidentally on Friday the 13th – but he soon followed up with dropped shots on the 15th and 17th.

But to Dyson’s credit he eased the blow by bagging a brace of birdies on the 14th and at the last hole to ensure the damage was minimal.
