A MAGNIFICENT first round 67 helped fire teenager Damon Coulson to Fulford Golf Club’s Club Championship.
The 17-year-old followed up his five-under-par effort with a second round 71 at the Heslington course to win the prestigious title by six shots.
Coulson’s opening salvo was so impressive it left him eight shots clear of then second-placed Jamie Miller (75) and the rest of the field at the half-way stage of the competition.
Coulson followed an eagle at the fourth hole in the first round with another on last hole of the afternoon round to be crowned in impressive style.
George Forder, the York Union Amateur champion, was the nearest challenger to Coulson, who dominated the tournament from start to finish.
Gary Pearce, general manager and secretary at Fulford, said: “Damon is one of the younger guys who we have brought through junior coaching for a few years.
“He has a lot of potential and, in the morning round in particular, it was really windy and that is always significant as to how difficult the course is. It was an unbelievable score in the first round.”
Coulson said: “It was great. I eagled the fourth in the first round and the key was keeping it in play.
“I holed putts when I needed to and it is a great start to my season. It took a big chunk off my handicap as well and I am down to 0.1.
“My ambition is to become a professional. I have entered the British Boys’ Amateur but I need to take another couple of shots off my handicap.”
Meanwhile, Lyndsey Sargent and Russell Yates claimed Allerthorpe Park Golf Club’s Danby’s Anniversary Cup with a total of 41 points.
The competition, which is an 18-hole four-ball better-ball stableford, was well supported and Sargent and Yates got home a point clear of runners-up Richie Bartley and Iain Charlton.
• Yorkshire found only Lancashire too tough a nut to crack in the Womens’ Northern County Match week at Ganton Golf Club.
The team, which included Malton’s Emma Brown and Fulford’s Charlotte Austwick, saw off Cheshire, Northumberland, Durham and Cumbria in the round robin event before falling to Lancashire on the final day.
“We won our games quite easily,” said Brown. “We beat Durham 9-0, Cumbria 8-1, Cheshire 6-3 and Northumberland 6-3 but, unfortunately, we lost 6-3 to Lancashire. We came second to them overall.
“It was foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. I played the foursomes against Lancashire with Becky Wood, from Hallamshire, and we won four and three with five birdies. I won five of my six games throughout the week.
“It is always a good week and nice being away with a team. It would have been nice to have won on home ground.”
