Beckett Cricket League: Swinton’s super start
10:10am Wednesday 23rd May 2012 in Sport
SWINTON & Broughton’s Ryedale Beckett League division two season finally got under way at the third attempt after the weather had ruled out play in their first two matches – and it started in style.
Phil Hill (51 not out) batted through their innings and had good support from Dan Reardon (17) and Richard Allenby (25 not out).
Harrison was the pick of Whitwell’s bowlers, conceding just five runs from three overs.
Whitwell got close to Swinton’s score but kept losing wickets at vital times. Good contributions came from Langley (23), Lynch (14) and Pulling (18no) but it was a case of catches win matches for Swinton with their fielders in great form taking six catches in gloomy conditions.
Will Lund (3-17), Donna Monkman (2-25) and Adam Hill (2-18) all bowled well for Swinton.
Westow batted first against Nawton Grange and made 58-7, Ben Taylor top-scoring with 16, while J Dunn took 3-6 off two overs. Nawton in reply made 59-6, with Tim Sharples hitting 25 not out as B Taylor took 3-25 off four overs.
The figures do not tell what a great game this was, however, between two young sides.
On a slow wicket with runs hard to get, top scorer Sharples got the winning run off the last ball.
Great Habton had a comprehensive win over Ryedale.
Habton scored 112-6, though A Frank (26), B Gill (25no) and J Lumley, who smashed 18 not out off four balls. T Temple took 3-29 and D Hardy 2-27.
Ryedale managed only 57-5 in reply, of which I Smith made 25 not out and S Farrow 19. W Curtis (3-5) and K Newton (2-17) did the damage.
