Hunters six-wicket victory over RAF Under-25 XI

The Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League’s centenary celebrations opened with a six-wicket victory over the Royal Air Force Under-25 XI at Sheriff Hutton Bridge.

Success came almost instantly when Steve Sergeant removed opener S Shelford for a duck in the first over.

The RAF side enjoyed a 57-run partnership between L Griffiths and C Oliver before Sheriff Hutton Bridge’s Adam Fisher – in RAF mode – showed his class in a partnership of 88 with Oliver, whose 62 ended to a stunning one-handed catch on the boundary by Richard Carroll.

Fisher reached his half-century off 46 balls and then watched a series of partners depart as he was frustratingly deprived of the strike until, with the overs expiring, he was caught by Mark Cook for 71 off 63 deliveries.

The RAF ranks totalled 224-9 with Steve Walmsley claiming 3-42 and Matt Mudd 2-39.

The League side’s opening pairing of Mark Fisher (Sheriff Hutton Bridge) and Walmsley (Studley Royal) had little difficulty in forging a stand of 107.

Fisher holed out after making 35 and Walmsley later fell to visiting skipper S Edmed for 67.

Stamford Bridge all-rounder Sergeant and Harrogate’s Marcus Budgeon put the issue without doubt. Sergeant fell for 37 with Budgeon 23 not out as the hosts won with 14 balls to spare.
