A toughened up Fulford Golf Club course will set a stiff test in this year’s North-East qualifier for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship.
Fulford professional Guy Wills said he is looking forward to seeing PGA pros from across the region tackle the new-look layout on May 9.
Said Wills: “We’ve toughened up the course – redesigned bunkers and repositioned tees so that we’ve also moved with the times.
“Quite a few changes have been made in recent years both on and off the course. I don’t think anyone can accuse us of standing still.
“We’re honoured to be hosting the qualifier. I think any players who haven’t played the course for a while will notice the changes.”
Fulford GC’s general manager Gary Pearce added: “The improvements and redevelopments we’re making are ongoing.
“We’re trying to combat the advances of new technology in the game and want our course to continue to be a test for players.
“We feel that bunkers that were positioned 100 years ago are not appropriate for today’s game.”
Added Pearce: “We were proud that our greens were considered some of the best on the European Tour and we want to maintain those standards.”
Leading qualifiers from the May 9 Fulford tournament, that includes David Padgett, the pro at Pannal GC in Harrogate, will book their place in the £78,000 final in association with Peugeot, being played at the De Vere Carden Park in Cheshire from August 7 to 10.
